The advantages & disadvantages of co-education system
Education is a right of both boys and girls. However, they are different in the way they learn, and they have different interests and strengths, that’s why people in some countries prefer to send their children to a single-sex school than to a co-educational one.
On the one hand, in some countries, the choice of separating boys and girls at schools is often advocated on the basis of traditions, cultural or religious values. In some muslim countries, such as in Saudi Arabia, most of people prefer to send their children to a single-sex school because the parents consider it as a tradition or a cultural value which they inherited from their ancestors and to which they hold on strongly. For instance, a father who used to go to a koranic school when he was a child, decides to educate his son on his way, by sending him to a koranic school in which he will learn the Koran with boys instead of sending him to a co-educational elemantary school. In addition, some muslims claim that the religion necessitates the separation of both sexes unless there will be lots of distractions and problems. By doing this, students will be able to concentrate more in class. Moreover, some teachers believe in this kind of education because it is very fruitful, it helps increasing class participation, and also in the improvements of the level of students, and they get good grades in their exams. Besides, they are better able to focus on their school work and likely to show off or impress each other. So, some muslim countries see that the single sex-educational system is the right choice for every student due to its benefits.
On the other hand, despite all of these benefits of single-sex education, the opponents of this or the proponents of co-educational system see that the idea of splitting up boys and girls is not a good idea. The opponents claim that the single-sex educational system has negative impacts on both boys and girls. For example, they will not have social skills or the opportunity to interact between them, compared with those who are educated in co-education schools, who have a great level of confidence and a deepened relationship which help both boys and girls in their future life, especially when they will marry, they will be able to understand and respect each other without facing any problem. Furthermore, the fence of shyness will be removed, and they will be encouraged to talk and discuss things freely and confidently. As a result of this single-sex educational system, both boys and girls will fail to communicate and to know each other.
To sum up, one can conclude that single-sex educational system pros outweigh its cons ; that is to say, in some situations this system of education is necessary, but in others is not because it all depends on the educational strategies of a country and the beliefs of its people. However, co-educational system is very beneficial for bothe sexes as well as the society.
